Books

There are so many so many great books about goats and goat products. We wanted to share a list of some of our favorites.

Picture
Atlas of Goat Products
Editors Roberto Rubino, Pierre Morand-Fehr, and Lucia Sepe

It contains information on traditional and new goat products from 28 countries, all five continents, for a total of 210 forms.

An English language book of 384 pages presents 210 products of 28 countries in the world.  It is published under the aegis of International Goat Association and Caseus.  The work was coordinated by Roberto Rubino, and is available at the website www.caseus.it.

More than 140 cheeses are described, besides meat (carcass or processed), milk and by-products, fibre and skin, sweeties, recipes, medication and tools, such as music instruments and knife.

The forms are ordered by continent.  Each product is described in an individual form, which comprises a photo of the product, a location map, and the following information: origin, type of product, area of production, techniques and processing, trading, using and estimate of production.

Best management practices for dairy goat farmers
Compiled and written by Clara Hedrich, with assistance from Dr. Chris Duemler, DVM, and Dan Considine

The main purpose of this “Best Practices Guide” is to provide some insight into the dairy goat industry.
  • This guide contains basic knowledge to help those who are considering a dairy goat operation make a sound decision as to whether or not this would be a viable business for them. Success in the industry is not guaranteed.
  • A goat dairy farmer in this “Best Practices Guide” is defined as a farm milking at least 50 does and selling their milk to a milk plant. There are a few exceptions but most plants require a farm to be milking at least 50 does before they will consider picking up their milk due to the cost of transportation. A farmstead dairy is one in which the farm processes their own milk and sells their own product.

Upon perusing the book, the reader will see that experts in all areas of production were invited to author chapters. Excellent pictures and charts accompany the narrative of each chapter. Production of safe, wholesome dairy goat milk and milk products is the aim of all dairy goat producers. The editors and authors hope that this handbook serves to assist in fulfilling that aim.

Goat Production Handbook (HPSA)
The aim of this book is to assist owners of indigenous goats with extensive farming systems. It looks at ways to improve the productivity of their flocks. It is designed to be shared with farmers in a way that allows them to understand how to find their way through the book and how to find the information that they need. It is best if the book is part of a capacity building programme being implemented by extension officers and field workers.

A Guide to Starting a Commercial Goat Dairy (PDF)
Carol Delaney
Turning a passion into a viable business is a line-in-the-sand decision, and a new book by Northeast SARE Farmer Grant Specialist Carol Delaney, A Guide to Starting a Commercial Goat Dairy, covers what farmers should consider when planning a goat dairy startup. It also fills a gap—there are many periodicals and books with information about cow dairying, and this adds some needed weight on the small ruminant side of the scale.

Holistic Goat Care: A Comprehensive Guide to Raising Healthy Animals, Preventing Common Ailments, and Troubleshooting Problems

Goats have provided humankind with essential products for centuries; indeed, they bear the noble distinction of being the first domesticated farm animal. From providing milk and meat for sustenance and fiber and hides for clothing and shelter to carrying packs and clearing brush, there isn’t much that goats cannot do. Managing goats successfully requires an understanding of how nature designed them to thrive, including nutritional and psychological needs, as well as how to identify a problem and intercede before it’s too late.

How To Raise Goats
As pets or livestock, goats are increasingly popular animals on farms large and small. Easier and cheaper to keep than many larger animals, they will keep a pony company, pull a cart, and produce the perfect milk for many artisan cheeses or meat for some of the most up-and-coming ethnic cuisines.

Indigenous Goat Production Handbook
The 3rd edition of the Indigenous Goat Production Handbook is available. This book aims to assist owners of indigenous goats with semi-intensive and extensive farming systems. It looks at ways to improve the productivity of their herds and start commercializing. This edition contains an expanded section on internal parasites, specifically worms, innovations that have been carried out with farmers in South Africa such as goat dips and kid enclosures, and the results of lessons learned since the last edition. The book is part of an ongoing collaboration of the KwaZulu Natal Goat Agribusiness Project with HPSA, Mdukatshani, and the South African government and vets. DOWNLOAD HERE.

Milk and Dairy Products in Human Nutrition
Young Park &  George Haenlein
Milk is nature’s most complete food, and dairy products are considered to be the most nutritious foods of all. Several books have been published on the subject of milk and dairy products; however, these books contain only partial or limited coverage on the subject and usually focus primarily on cow milk and human milk.
